27/11/2004 It's true - Santa is from Luton!

After a grueling contest in Sweden one man emerged as the true Santa! Ron Horniblew from the Luton Arndale was made the worlds best Santa! Ron faced fierce competition from competitors from Russia, Estonia, Spain, France, Denmark and Sweden. All competitors for the title had to train reindeer, wrap presents and drive a sleigh. They also had to climb down a chimney. Shout Luton congratulates Ron and would like to let Ron know that we have been good all year! You can visit Ron at his grotto in the Arndale Centre.

04/11/2004 Show your Love for Luton on Thursday!

Sam Jordison standing in front of a particularly appropriate banner! (possibly with a little Photoshopping by Hull residents)

Join the lively debate at the Luton Central Library on Thursday (4th November 7:30pm) and stand up for your town! Entrance is only £1!
In a surprise revelation it seems that the Editor of "Crap Towns" loves Luton!
The man who dubbed Luton "the worst town in the country" wants to help knock the town off the top spot.
Sam Jordison, editor of the PanMacmillan publication "Crap Towns 2", said
today,"I realise that Luton doesn't want the 'Crap Town Label'. Trust in Luton have been doing excellent work with their football club and their community, which is why I've signed up as a member and why I've donated £250 to support them."
He went on, "I can't wait to attend the "I Love Luton Evening" to see what Lutonians really think about the town."
Sam will be speaking at the "I Love Luton" evening on Thursday 4th November at Luton Central Library. The night is a great chance for people in Luton to debate why they love the town and work on what can be done to improve the town.
Sam's generous donation will be used to support Trust in Luton's work, which currently includes plans to assist with funding the Junior Hatters Christmas Party, where they are hoping to supply goody bags to Luton Town's young fans.
Trust in Luton are also working closely with the club's Football in the
Community department to launch coaching schemes all over the area, including half-day coaching courses and termly coaching courses for disabled adults - but as always funds are urgently required to kickstart these projects.
A Trust in Luton Rep smiled, "Trust in Luton was created to offer a positive channel for Luton fans at a gloomy time, and now it really is paying off. A healthy club creates a happy town. The donation will help Luton to be top of Division One, but bottom of the Crap Town league!"
So Lutonians this is your chance to make sure the town gets listed in "Cool Towns 1"

Crap town fisticuffs: Rumor has it that the two authors of the Crap Towns (Dan and Sam) are having a bit of a tiff - about royalties!

27/10/2004 Cycle award for Luton!

Luton Borough Council has received an award for being one of the most improved highway authorities in England to implement measures to increase cycling. The review was carried out by the English Regions Cycling Development Team (ERCDT).
Shoutluton has noticed the new cycle rails installed around the station and roads marked to make it easier for cyclists to travel about the town. We look forward to when Luton can be more of a cycling town! Just looking at the numbers of cycles parked outside of Harpenden station shows that with improved facilities more people will take to this efficient form of transport!

23/10/2004 Crap Towns II saga continues

In conjunction with Ottakars bookshop the editor of the book Crap Towns II (where Luton features as first choice) is to appear at the Luton Library on 4th November at 7:30pm. Here the public, councilors can offer their points of view about the book and its conclusion about the town.
Yet another blow as a result of the book is that our neighboring village of Slip End are petitioning to cut all Luton associations including their LU1 post code!
But it does appear that some good has come of the book as the council are gearing up for projects including improving the particular drab corner of the Arndale (remember that Maze Project - will it finally happen?) featured in the book.
Come on folks this is only a joke book written by a company of loafers!

23/10/2004 A Unique solution to commuter mayhem

Train commuters to London are now used to the disruption caused by building work at Kings Cross and St Pancras stations. Thameslink have published a leaflet called a "Travel Buddy" detailing all the changes and new times. But from experience if you work in North London your situation is improved because now that the trains stop at St Pancras they are usually on time! However if you work in South or Central London you will now have to travel on the tube network until May. However there is another way!

A pioneering British company has developed a cycle called a Brompton that can fold up into the size of a small suitcase and can neatly fit between the seats on a Thameslink train! When you arrive at St Pancras within 20 seconds or less you have unfolded the bike and are speeding past all those people queueing for the tubes!

28/09/2004 It's time to walk or cycle to school!

School children are also encouraged to walk to school during 4th - 8th October which has been designated "International Walk to School" week.

28/09/2004 Microsoft make a presence in Luton school

Denbigh High school has become the first Microsoft Partner School in Luton, enabling them to develop a Learning Gateway where individual teachers will have vital information about every student's learning styles, strengths and areas for improvement by using Microsoft software. The school is one of 30 Microsoft Partner schools in the UK. Microsoft based in Seattle USA is the largest software company in the world and their products range from the X-box gaming system to the software that runs on almost every personal computer.

27/09/2004 If you have to be top of something...

...why not be the worst town in the UK! Luton has made it to number one in the Idler magazine's second edition of their Crap Town books. One of the reasons stated was the lack of entertainment venues and places to go, all I can think of is that they obviously did not look at my site! Some of the architecture is understandably dull (especially the corner of the Arndale featured on the cover) due to misguided 60's "innovation" but it makes the remaining victorian architecture even more special!

The award has invoked quite a diverse response - ranging from the inspired poetry by John Hegley written in defense of the town to downright condemnation by Gaurdian editor Sarfraz Manzoor. Sarfraz dislikes his hometown so much that he even created a mini TV series on channel 4 and is about to release a book on how he escaped Bury Park! If the town can inspire such feeling it must be an interesting place don't you think? After the books publication ex Luton tailors Sousters wasted no time in uprooting and now advertise themselves as Souster & Hicks of Savile Row!
