Someries Castle

Lord Wenlock's Mansion - Someries Castle

Someries castle's name was derived from William de Someries who had a residence on this site. The site was then acquired by Lord Wenlock in 1430 and the mansion was built. The house is unique in that it is regarded as one of the first brick buildings in England.

Although house was never completed by Wenlock and part was demolished in the 1700s the magnificent brickwork can still be seen in the remains of the gatehouse incorporating the chapel and lodge which still stands today.

The trip to the castle takes you past Luton Hoo and farm fields and makes a great cycle journey, although the road to the site can be a little steep.

The location of the ruins is also near an overlook to Luton Airport so any aviation enthusiasts may enjoy a bit of plane spotting!
